People believe that getting into the right college, earning good grades and being on the school football team are all steps to happiness. However, this isn’t true. Earning a degree or acing an exam doesn’t guarantee you’ll be happy in life.
Being accepted to a university doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be happy. A study of freshmen at college found that on average, their emotional well-being was only 50.7 out of 100.
It’s also been said that some jobs are more desirable than others, and people who do those jobs must be “successful”. But one poll of over 800 lawyers showed that they were less happy than other professionals. They drank and smoked more, too.
A better way to think about life is to understand that happiness will lead you to success.
To succeed in any field, you must have a positive attitude. For example, at Cornell University they had three groups of doctors diagnose the same case. The first group was told to take some candy later for their efforts and the second group was reminded that medicine is about helping people. The third group didn’t get any encouragement at all.
A study was conducted to see if positive emotions could help people perform better. The results showed that the group who received positive feedback were able to diagnose a patient’s condition faster and more accurately than the control group, illustrating how positive emotions can improve performance.
