Big Idea #1: Only you can unleash the positive power of personal accountability.
Let’s say you work in a job that you really hate. You’re stuck working long hours, the work is tedious and mind-numbing, and worst of all, the pay is poor. But instead of seeking a new job, you simply moan and complain about not having connections or enough jobs available for people who have no connections.
Many people have felt this way at some point in their lives. However, it doesn’t help to think that way because it doesn’t change anything.
If you want to make a change in your life, don’t blame others. Instead of blaming them, take responsibility for yourself and your actions.
Accountability can be a burden, especially when we’re responsible for something. We often pass the blame to someone else like our bosses or relatives.
But if you rely on others to do your work for you, then you’re not taking responsibility for your life. You can only improve yourself by being accountable and doing what needs to be done.
There are times when things seem overwhelming and you feel like giving up. However, it’s a choice that you make to get back on your feet and move forward towards your goals. Personal accountability is the key to success and in order to achieve this, one must take control of their circumstances by making choices.
Big Idea #2: To accept responsibility and in turn succeed, you can’t see yourself as a victim.
Think back to a time when you faced a big challenge. Maybe there was too much work, or not enough money. When you thought about the problem, how did it make you feel?
There are two ways to think about problems. Below the line, we blame others and see ourselves as victims. Above the line, we take responsibility for our own situation and focus on solutions.
However, when we think above the line, we come up with creative solutions to problems. For example, as vice president of sales at a company that didn’t have any new products in three years, Dennis encouraged his managers to look for alternative ways to increase sales.
Dennis shifted his team’s focus from complaining about sales to actually doing something about it. He and his team came up with creative solutions that eventually led to record sales.
It’s easy to blame others for your troubles. For example, when a natural disaster occurs or you are the victim of a crime.
In 1989, the son of John and Revé Walsh was kidnapped and killed. Yet even in the wake of such a tragedy, they managed to think above the line by taking action to help others. They have since worked to create support systems, develop preventative measures and improve legislation for cases of missing children.
