Big Idea #2: A speaker must be passionate about his/her subject.
What do the most successful people in the world have in common? They are passionate about what they do. Furthermore, being passionate is necessary for success in whatever field you’re pursuing.
Tony Hsieh is a successful online shoe retailer who has been able to grow his company into something much bigger than that. The reason for this success is that he puts an emphasis on making the lives of others better, rather than focusing only on himself and his business.
Passion is important to give an excellent presentation. A group of researchers in 2012 wanted to understand why investors gave money to some start-ups and not others. They observed presentations from 15-minute pitches for funding, and found that passion was essential for a successful pitch. It was even more important than the education, experience or age of the entrepreneurs. However, if you don’t naturally have passion as a speaker, then it’s something you can learn through practice and preparation.
The human brain constantly changes in response to the input it receives. In fact, a study found that London cab drivers have larger hippocampi than normal, which is why they’re so good at navigating.
In a similar way, if you put yourself in a position where you have to speak passionately regularly, your brain will adapt and improve.
