The human brain is one of nature’s most complex creations. It contains 100 billion neurons, which people use to perform tasks on a daily basis. People can remember past experiences and process current events with their brains. However, the complexity of life barely makes the brain work hard. Imagine if we could unlock all that power in our brains and improve it beyond its normal capacity?

The human brain is deeply connected to every cell in the body. The mind and the body are not separate entities, but work together. Feedback loops can occur when outside stimuli set off a chain reaction of simultaneous messages that sometimes conflict with each other.

If you’re walking down the street and a dog jumps out from behind a door, your heart will start to beat faster. This is because your brain sends a message to your body that there might be danger.

If you’re scared, your heart may beat faster than normal. However, that’s usually prevented by another message from the brain telling the adrenal glands to produce hormones that will prevent your heart from beating too fast. After a while, these hormones will cause your heart to return to its normal rhythm.

It’s exciting that we can control the way our bodies react to stimuli. For example, Tibetan monks can meditate and influence their brains to send messages to their bodies that will help them in cold weather.

Mind control can help people who have had strokes by repairing damaged neural pathways that are used to send messages from the brain to parts of the body. This helps them regain partial use of their limbs.

A stroke can cause paralysis, but now it’s possible to regain movement with therapy. The patient focuses on simple movements and sends a message that way to the affected area of the body. Over time, neural pathways are repaired and normal movement is restored.

This example shows us how strong and powerful the brain can be when we focus on it.

Big Idea #2: People can create new brain cells through challenging their minds and exercising.

People sometimes talk about activities in terms of how much they cost the brain. As if we have a limited supply of brain cells!

The human brain has a lot of neurons. The brain can even generate more neurons if it’s needed. There is a myth that the brain loses its ability to function over time and becomes damaged, but in reality this isn’t true. Every day we lose about 85,000 neurons, which is very little compared to how many are available in the cerebral cortex alone (40 billion).
