Overall Summary

Random Family is a non-fiction book about two teenagers from the Bronx who are trying to make their way in life. It mainly focuses on Coco, whose mother Lourdes has been arrested for drug use and prostitution. She’s also pregnant with her second child at sixteen years old. The other main character is Jessica, who lives across the street from Coco and helps take care of Coco’s daughter when she isn’t working as a stripper or going out with different men. When we first meet Jessica, she seems bright-eyed but calculating as she uses her beauty to attract men who can help provide security for her future.

The mother of one of the subjects in a film is Puma, who was famous for a short time. He doesn’t have much experience as a father because he’s still young and is trying to focus on his own career rather than family. The mother falls into drugs and struggles with her addiction while raising her daughter alone. Jessica meets Boy George, who becomes an important person in the illegal drug trade business. Chapter 1

Her mother rents an apartment there that houses her four children as well as her boyfriend, Big Daddy. The street bustles with activity from people going about their daily lives: shopping, eating out, socializing—as well as drug dealers and their customers. The 1980s are upon us now.

Jessica is a young woman who dresses up for every occasion, because she knows that luck can strike at any time.
