Overall Summary

Stephanie Plum is a bounty hunter in New Jersey. She was recently divorced and out of work, so she took up the family business of bail bondsmen. Her cousin Vinnie gave her a job as a bounty hunter because he needs one himself. Stephanie has never shot anyone before, but the money will make everything better for her and she takes on the job anyway.

Stephanie Plum’s first big assignment as an apprehension agent is to catch Trenton police officer Joe Morelli, who skipped his court date. Stephanie will receive $10,000 if she can catch him within one week. She wants the money for herself, but she also wants revenge against Morelli because he broke her heart when they were dating.

Stephanie and Joe grew up in the same neighborhood, but he had a bad boy reputation. He seduced Stephanie when she was sixteen years old, then wrote about it on a public restroom wall before moving on to his next victim. When Stephanie was nineteen years old, she saw him walking down the street and jumped the curb in her father’s Buick to run him down with the car. Now in her thirties, Stephanie is still looking for revenge against Joe.

Stephanie has been waiting for this day ever since high school when she first met Joe at a party where he made fun of her nose ring which she wore back then but not now because it’s out of style except that now it’s back into style so maybe if you see one on someone you should compliment them or say something like wow your nose ring is so cool do you have any piercings anywhere else?

Stephanie Plum, who has been trying to capture Joe Morelli for a long time now, finally finds his hiding place. She confronts him and demands that he surrender. However, she doesn’t have the authority to make him do anything so she just walks away from there feeling like a failure. Later on in the story Stephanie goes back to Vinnie’s office where his secretary tells her about Ranger – one of Vinnie’s bounty hunters who is very good at what he does.

Stephanie then meets up with Ranger and learns some basic skills which will help her take down Morelli in the future.

Ricardo Carlos “Ranger” Manoso runs his own security company. He’s also a bounty hunter who does high-risk apprehensions for Vinnie. He dresses in black and has an irresistible smile like Morelli, Stephanie’s boyfriend and Ranger’s friend. After he outfits Stephanie with a revolver, he briefs her on Morelli’s case. While there is no question that Morelli shot a man named Ziggy Kuleska, Morelli claims Kuleska was armed and he acted in self-defense. However, no weapon beyond Morelli’s gun was found in the apartment of Carmen Sanchez where the shooting occurred. Sanchez, a prostitute who associated with Kuleska has not been seen since he died but she may have been killed by someone else at the scene because her body hasn’t been recovered yet either but it appears she won’t be coming back to give any more information about what happened that night because nobody knows where she went after she left Carmen Sanchez’ apartment when Ziggy got shot by Joe Morelli so we’ll never know if anyone else besides Joe had weapons or if anybody other than him committed murder at that crime scene which makes this case very difficult to solve since all we can do now is wait for Carmen Sanchez to show up again someday if she survives whatever happened to her so maybe then we’ll find out what really happened between Joe and Ziggy before they both ended up dead.

Stephanie’s parents and grandmother live just a few blocks from her apartment. She visits them for dinner every weekend, where they talk about their lives. Stephanie’s grandmother thinks she has an exciting new job, but in reality it is not that glamorous. Her grandmother accidentally shoots the chicken while holding Stephanie’s gun during one of these dinners. Meanwhile, Stephanie’s mother wishes she would settle down and have kids like everyone else in her family does.
