Big Idea #1: Avoid Busyness and Distractions
Why do we feel like there’s never enough time to do the things that we want? The answer is because of our own actions. We’ve created this problem ourselves by taking on too much, and not managing our time well.
There are two main phenomena at play here. The first is the busy bandwagon, which tells us that we need to be productive all the time and squeeze as much work as possible into every moment of our day. This results in overloaded inboxes, jam-packed calendars, and never ending to do lists. The second phenomenon is infinity pools like Facebook or Twitter where you can instantly access unlimited content without ever leaving your screen.
People spend a lot of time watching television and using smartphones. In fact, the average person spends four hours on each per day. That’s like working another full-time job! Most people are already busy enough with their actual jobs, so it makes sense that they would be spending all this extra time with these devices.
The Busy Bandwagon and Infinity Pool have joined forces to become a tag-teaming duo of time destroyers. The Busy Bandwagon is exhausting us, so we’re easily lured into the Infinity Pools to passively soak up their content. We bounce between the two all day long – day in, day out.
So, the question is: How can we escape? Well, that’s what these points are all about. First, we’ll look at things not to do. Then, we’ll look at things to do.
