Leadershifting is making changes in your leadership that will help you grow and improve yourself and your organization. The author has had many leadershifts throughout his career which have helped him make a positive impact on organizations and the world.

In this speech, the author shares his key points about leadership. First, he’ll explain how dancing tango is a metaphor for leadership. Second, he will discuss why focusing on growth rather than hitting goals is more important in business and life. Finally, he’ll share an example of influence from Claude to Maxwell to illustrate his point.

Big Idea #1: Great leaders bring out the best in everyone, rather than seeking to shine themselves.

Many people who aspire to be leaders think mostly of themselves. They don’t realize that a leader is someone who helps others instead of focusing on his or her own goals and aspirations.

To be a great leader, you need to think about how to help others succeed. A way to do that is by thinking of yourself as the conductor of an orchestra. Instead of being a soloist who plays their instrument and everyone else follows along, you have the responsibility to make sure your team performs well together. Cellist Han-Na Chang said that conducting gives her more opportunities than playing cello because it allows her to draw out potential from other people.

In order to become a successful leader, you must understand the people around you. One way of doing this is by watching two hundred dancers in perfect harmony dance the tango.

The host of the party explained that to be a good leader, you need to know what it’s like to be led. This is true both in business and in tango dancing. Good leaders are able to work well with their followers because they understand them.

The leader should be focused on helping others to shine. He/she can do this by making sure he has the right attitude toward his people and his relationship with them. The leader should center his leadership around their needs, listen first before expecting them to listen to him or her, work out what they do well and compliment them on it, if he/she sets out a big picture for the organization make sure they are in it, and don’t just tell them about your vision but invite them to help you achieve it.

These actions are simple but need to be backed with a strong intention. The author says that you should focus on helping others shine, and not just yourself.

Big Idea #2: Developing a growth mind-set is a better approach than focusing on hitting simple goals.

Maxwell was a young church leader in Ohio. He set himself the goal of making his church the largest in Ohio, and he achieved that goal by doubling his congregation in one year. However, after celebrating, Maxwell started to reflect on what had happened. What he realized is that personal growth was more important than hitting numerical goals for growing membership at his church. That realization led him to develop a new mindset about leadership: from setting goals to focusing on growth instead.

People who have a goal mind-set are more likely to value achievement and status than people with a growth mind-set. A goal mind-set prioritizes hitting their goals, whereas a growth mind-set asks how far they can take the idea or concept.
