Pokémon Go is an interactive game that involves players moving around in the real world to catch virtual Pokémon characters. The game was released by Niantic, a former subsidiary of Google, and it became a huge success almost overnight. In its first week on the market, it was downloaded more than 50 million times and people were spending 43 minutes per day playing the game.

Niantic has created augmented reality games before. Ingress was a cult hit in 2012, and the company’s other game didn’t gain much traction. Still, Pokémon Go is their first mixed-reality game that has become mainstream because it clearly had entertainment as its purpose and encourages players to go outside if they want to catch virtual Pokémon in real life by interacting with others.

Traditionally, online multiplayer games don’t have a single server. Instead, they are spread out among players. Niantic’s Pokémon Go software was an advancement in that it used a “single source” system to allow all the players access to new information at the same time. This may be good for augmented reality because it will increase its popularity and may encourage more development of AR technology. It could also push AR beyond gaming into other areas like museums where you can learn about art by looking at your phone instead of searching a browser or using apps on your phone to help you learn about what you’re viewing in front of you.
