Overview

If you want to start a business but aren’t sure if you have the necessary skills, start by taking on an adventure. If you’re able to complete it, then you may be ready for the challenges of starting a business.

The last few decades have seen the rise of many companies in Silicon Valley, California. These companies are now among the most influential in the world; it would be hard to exaggerate their role in our lives.

But, like all success stories, it’s not perfect.

A closer look at the way these companies work reveals that they’re not perfect.

Why do foreign workers put up with bad conditions in tech companies? Why doesn’t Google use humans to do most of its work? These are some of the key points that will be discussed.

Big Idea #1: Immigration to Silicon Valley is so tough that some people are willing to enter fake marriages.

In the 18th century, immigrants to America were indentured servants who worked for several years in exchange for passage. Today, tech geeks hoping to work in Silicon Valley face a similar issue. Immigrants looking for jobs there are exploited and have limited options. One solution is the H-1B visa, which allows immigrants into Silicon Valley companies if they can prove their value with skills that aren’t available locally. However, only 16,000 of those visas are granted annually.

The H-1B visa is a temporary work visa for foreign workers. It allows them to stay in the United States for up to six years, but they have no job security. If their employer goes out of business or fires them, then they must leave the country and can’t get another visa until five years later when they apply for permanent residency. The companies benefit because they can hire highly skilled employees at lower wages than American workers would accept.

It’s not surprising that immigrants want to avoid this. The easiest way to do so is by getting married for the sake of immigration, since family-preference visas account for two thirds of all successful applicants.

Surprisingly, this method worked for a Greek man who wanted to work at the author’s start-up company. Stanis Argyris married a Turkish woman and obtained an F-1 student visa. Now he could stay in the United States and finally work at the author’s company.

Big Idea #2: Google earns a lot of money from its automated advertising system.

Sure, it would be nice to print your own money. But since counterfeiting is a crime, the next best thing would be to create a company like Google. One of Silicon Valley’s greatest success stories, Google generates billions of dollars in revenue each year by providing services for people who use its search engine and other products.

Google is a search engine that provides answers to questions about cameras and lawyers. It also generates ads for companies related to the keywords being searched. Google earns money when people click on those ads, depending on how much advertisers pay for each keyword. Insurance can earn up to $54 per click, while other popular ones like camera may only earn around $4 per click.

Google is amazingly efficient at dealing with advertisers. They have a computer system that handles all the bidding for them, which saves time and effort.

This makes sense because there are billions of different keywords people search for, and it would be impossible to sell ad space for each one.

To solve this problem, Google holds an auction. The moment someone searches for a keyword, Google’s computers scan through all the pre-placed bids that advertising companies have made.

When people search for something, the highest bids are considered first. The ad that best combines these two criteria will be featured at the top of the search results. If you search for “London Furniture” today, Swoon Editions might be ranked highly; next week it could be Unum Design.
