1-Page Summary of The Key to Rebecca
Overview
The Key to Rebecca is about a man who struggles with decency and ego. Although many of the characters in the novel are flawed, William Vandam represents some of the best traits of Western civilization. He has an intellectual contest with Alex Wolff, which pits virtue against vice.
Vandam is a man of intense loyalties. He’s loyal to the Allied cause, to his men, and even to Wolff (his wife’s killer). Vandam has an intense love for his son and daughter-in-law, but he struggles with which loyalty should take precedence when there are conflicts between them. His most important loyalty is to Sonja El Aram—he loves her more than he does himself or anything else in the world. However, she betrays him by sleeping with Wolff; that betrayal leads directly into Vandam’s decision to go after Wolff and get revenge on him for what happened before.
