Big Idea #1: Mark Cuban worked his way up from sleeping on floors to owning his own company.

Mark Cuban moved to Dallas when he was 24. He wanted three things: sunshine, job opportunities and women. His car broke down, so he started off sleeping on the floor of an acquaintance’s apartment with a few polyester suits.

Mark Cuban had several jobs, which he knew would help him in his career because they all represented opportunities to learn. He learned a lot from those jobs, and it wasn’t necessary for him to find the perfect job right after college. Rather, it’s better to build on your skills first by taking various kinds of jobs.

Cuban learned about computers at a young age and worked for Mellon Bank. He was fired after he tried to improve the company without consulting his boss first.

After moving to Dallas, he got a software job. He bought himself a computer for $99 and started learning how to program it. Rather than returning to college, he devoted his time entirely into this pursuit because it was an opportunity for him to get paid while learning more about programming.

He worked on the same project for months without getting any feedback from his boss or colleagues.

When working at different jobs, you learn that each job is unique. You can’t always apply the same methods from one job to another.

When Cuban found that his bosses weren’t open to their employees’ ideas, he decided not to work there anymore. So he left and founded his own company called MicroSolutions that sold PC software and configured computers.

Microsolutions had its share of problems. At one point, a secretary stole nearly all the company’s money. However, Mark Cuban was able to grow it into a strong company that eventually brought in revenue of over $30 million.

Big Idea #2: Cuban started out as a small business owner and later branched out into a field he loved.

After Cuban had started MicroSolutions, he sold it for $6 million. It’s hard to imagine that a small company will grow into something big. But as Cuban showed us, even the smallest businesses can become huge successes.

After MicroSolutions, Cuban started Broadcast.com, which he later renamed to AudioNet. It was an internet radio platform that allowed people to tune into NBA and NFL games online. Yahoo eventually became interested in the company and acquired it for $5.9 billion in 1999.
