Now think: What does God think about your negative thoughts? You can always choose what you do next after writing them down. Trust in God’s plan for you, and your negative thoughts will become positive ones.
Everyone has negative thoughts. For example, do I deserve happiness? Am I good enough? We all have these questions at some point in our life. However, not everyone knows how to deal with those thoughts and often lets them consume them until they spiral into a downward cycle of negativity that just gets worse and worse.
Negative thoughts can lead to negative actions, but there are ways to disrupt those thought spirals. Jennie Allen, author of “Climbing Your Way Out,” argues that a closer relationship with God and Jesus will help you overcome your negative thoughts and emotions.
This passage will help you figure out when to be alone with God and when to go out and find community; how to be humble even in the face of adversity; and how to put other people first.
Big Idea #1: We all have negative thoughts, but we can choose to not let them control us.
Jennie Allen might seem like she’s got it all figured out. She’s a loving wife and mother with a successful career spreading the word of God. To those around her, Allen appears to be a model of success. However, even she struggles with negative thoughts and questions her faith from time to time.
After the author gave a few talks at a Baptist church, she had an encounter with demons. She told the audience about them and was surprised when she encountered one after her speech. The demon said to her, “We are coming for you.” Just as Allen was going back on stage for another talk, there was a power cut in the building.
When she was a young girl, the author’s sister had an incident in which she thought her hands were on fire. This sent the author into a negative spiral of thoughts that lasted for over two years. Every night at three o’clock in the morning, she would wake up from these dark thoughts and wonder if God even existed or whether what she was doing made any sense.
We all have negative thoughts, and some of them can last for quite a while. However, there is a way to break out of that cycle. By thinking about your thoughts, you can change the direction they’re heading in. The author suggests that by believing in Jesus Christ and submitting yourself to Him, you will be able to choose positive thoughts over negative ones.
Jennie realized that she was in a negative thought spiral, and it helped her to break out of it. She realized that if she continued on the same path, she would never be happy again. The author will explain why Jennie’s thoughts were so important later in this book.

These days, it is easy to get distracted. You can be easily distracted by your phone or social media sites. You can also distract yourself with too much work or friends. The truth is that we all need a little bit of solitude and quiet time in our lives because sometimes we just need to think about things on our own without the help of other people. Sometimes you just have to do something for yourself instead of relying on others for support and guidance when facing problems in life.
So, that’s what she told her friend. She said to embrace silence and confide in God. Silence is scientifically proven to be beneficial for us because it allows us to connect with our inner selves. Prayer and meditation are known to alter the way we think by changing the physical structure of our brains. So why do we avoid being alone with ourselves? Are we afraid of realizing that there’s something wrong or that we’re all alone? It certainly can be scary when you listen closely to your negative thoughts, but it’s a good first step toward overcoming them.
