Overview

Maya Angelou’s autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, is about her life as a black girl in Arkansas. She was born in California and moved to Stamps with her brother when she was only three years old. Her parents were rarely around because they were working so hard to survive. Maya learned quickly that there were many differences between blacks and whites while living in the South during the Depression era. However, her grandmother owned a store where everyone went for food and supplies; therefore, she had more freedom than others of color because most of the town respected her.

Maya’s childhood is not happy. She lives in a poor neighborhood with her brother, Bailey, and their mother. Maya has to watch while Bailey goes off to school every day because she can’t afford the bus fare. While he’s gone, she gets into trouble by stealing food from the grocery store where they work after school. When Maya’s father returns for his children, they move back to Stamps (Mississippi), where Grandmother Baxter lives. Their grandmother is white but looks black; she owns a lot of property and businesses in town and controls crime families as well as the police department through bribery or blackmail.

When Maya is eight years old, her mother’s boyfriend rapes her during one of their visits home from California—and then dies mysteriously when released on bail before trial. Her family decides that it would be best if no one knew about what happened so they kill him themselves instead of letting him go on trial. Shortly afterwards, however, there are rumors around town that someone killed him. This results in increased discrimination against them, including a dentist who refuses treatment for Maya due to her skin color. The family moves back to California shortly thereafter.

World War II is a time of change for Maya. Her mother falls in love with a powerful business man, and Maya learns about the Black underground. She also learns how to be independent as her new step-father cares for her like family. However, she learns that people can be very selfish when she visits her father and finds out he has another girlfriend who treats him poorly. He becomes drunk at a bar with prostitutes, so his daughter takes him home and crashes the car on their way back from Mexico. When they return home after this incident, Maya’s father’s girlfriend cuts open Maya’s stomach and sends her away to live with friends until she heals properly. After running away from home because of problems at school, Maya meets some homeless youths in an abandoned junkyard community where she lives for one month before returning home again to find that nothing exciting happened while she was gone!

Over the next year, Maya realizes she’s still different than her peers who haven’t had as many experiences. She’s older and more mature because of those experiences. She finds herself confused by her maturation into womanhood, especially when she gets pregnant right after having sex for the first time. Her mother helps her realize that being a mother is instinctual and that only she can be successful at it.
