Overview

Even if you’re not a money-hungry investor or gambler, you probably think about money more than you’d like to admit. There’s rent to pay and kids to feed, so suddenly your car needs an expensive repair. And at the end of the month there is nothing left over for fun things. What you need is a financial plan tailored to your life and needs. It might sound scary or boring, but with these key points it will be easy to make a personal financial plan that will take stress out of your life and allow you do the things that matter most in life.

In this article, you’ll learn how to make budgeting fun; why you should avoid shopping on Amazon; and why CNBC is not the best source of financial advice.

Big Idea #1: First you have to discover why money is important to you.

The foundation of every successful financial plan is the answer to a simple question: Why is money important? Think about this before reading further, and write down your answer at the top of a piece of paper. You’ll need it later.

Asking why money is important to you helps you define what you value. This will help you develop a financial plan that fits your individual needs.

Think about the last time you went to the doctor. Different patients receive different treatments because doctors first need to find out what’s wrong with them in order to determine a fitting treatment. The same goes for financial plans, as knowing why you value money will aid in the examination of your financial situation and help develop a “treatment” that will work best for you.

People who want to save money for travel and those who want a secure pension will likely have different financial plans. One might invest in an RV, the other might invest in a good pension fund.

If you know why you value money, then it helps to assess if the way that you spend your time reflects those values. If you value money because it gives you financial freedom to spend more time with your family, then the way that I spend my time should reflect that.

Imagine that you’re an independent business owner who spends all weekend on Twitter trying to increase your followers. You spend so much time on Twitter that you interrupt dinner with your family to reply to tweets and check your followers. Are you really living according to your values?

Now that you have determined the importance of money in your life, it’s time to set some financial goals.

Big Idea #2: Guess what your goals are and fine-tune to reach them.

In the past, people would have never thought that free apps like Skype or WhatsApp could cause their phone bills to plummet. However, it’s important to realize that predicting the future is impossible. Instead of setting specific goals for your finances, you should leave some room for flexibility in case something unexpected happens. For example, if there’s a storm outside while you’re on vacation and you can’t go bike riding or picnicking as planned because of it, why not visit a museum instead?

Financial planning isn’t fixed. If you get off track, be willing to alter your goals and plans accordingly so that you can stay on the right path.

Let’s say you want to pay off a $40,000 student loan in three years. But then there’s an unexpected financial crisis that forces you to change your plan and settle on paying it off in the same amount of time but only by saving $28,000 instead.

Once you’ve realized that the future is unpredictable, it’s time to start writing down some goals. However, what should your goals be?
