Overview

If a strange old man offered to teach you the path of peace, would you take him up on the offer? Way of the Peaceful Warrior is an autobiographical novel about Dan Millman. He was a gymnast who attended UC Berkeley in his late teens. One day he went to get gas and met an odd, aging man who seemed to possess supernatural physical skills as well as uncanny ability to see through Millman’s mental and emotional defenses. The old man provoked Millman’s curiosity by asking if he wanted to learn how to change his life for the better. This led Socrates (the name that Millman gave him) into teaching him how he could live with focus and intention, as well as how one can transform passive feelings like sadness or fear into positive action. Under this alias, Socrates subjected Millman to various grueling challenges including some moments of magical realism where they were able to overcome obstacles together which helped them move forward spiritually towards enlightenment and leading satisfying lives after enduring these odd lessons from Socrates.

In 1966, Millman is a promising collegiate gymnast who has already won the World Trampoline Championship. He’s also well liked by women and manages to keep up his grades despite his busy schedule. One day, he hopes to compete in the Olympics. Meanwhile, he’s miserable because of nightmares that involve a robed grim reaper approaching him in an unknown dark city. In the dream, death beckons at Millman as if it were time for him to die. Suddenly, an unexpected rescuer appears—a white-haired old man who draws the grim reaper’s attention away from Millman with laughter and wrestling moves until they both become one entity: The Grim Reaper himself who presses his hands together in prayer instead of threatening mortals.

One night, unable to sleep, a man named Millman goes for a walk. He ends up at a gas station and meets an elderly man who looks exactly like the white-haired savior he had seen in his dreams. They talk for just a moment before Socrates tells him to come back tomorrow. The next day, after much thought about what happened the previous evening, Millman decides to call this man Socrates (the name of one of his favorite philosophers). Upon meeting again with Socrates, he finds out that he is actually not real but merely an illusion created by Millman’s mind; however, it doesn’t take long before they become friends. Over several months together,Socrates teaches him how to live with purpose and be happy despite life’s challenges. Eventually,Millman falls in love with another student of Socrates named Joy. Before leaving on vacation home to Los Angeles,Socrates warns Millman that there will soon be some sort of trial which will test his inner strength and courage ; when that happens though,he’ll have no choice but to face it alone.

After he moved to L.A., Millman decided to buy a motorcycle, which eventually led him into a crash that crushed his leg and caused several injuries. He visited the hospital where Joy gave him an inspirational story from Socrates; this story was about how anyone can use pain as an opportunity for growth and change, like she did when she lost her son in a car accident.

After Millman recovers from his injuries, he begins running and exercising to get back in shape. At the same time, Socrates resumes training him by giving him increasingly difficult tasks that test his willpower. For example, Socrates makes Millman run with Joy while fasting for a week. He also assigns Millman a vegetarian diet and tells him not to use any drugs or have sex for an entire month. These restrictions help Millman understand how certain foods affect his body and gives him discipline because he can’t resume lessons until he completes all of these tasks.
